The Towel Edit, Vol. 3

18 Pieces
The Towel Edit Vol. 3 — Local Rule LCLRL towel draped over a white golf bag against a concrete wall

A towel is the cheapest thing hanging off a bag, which is why eighteen brands treat that rectangle of terry cotton as the place to put a whole idea. The category reads better up close than it does from the cart path.

The best of them do something a towel has no obligation to do. Agronomy Workshop prints theirs to look like a crumpled paper bag. Seamus had Pendleton weave the Wyeth Trail as a jacquard rather than printing a picture of one. Mogshade and Parmore put blackletter type on cream and shot it against a wall covered in graffiti.

Prices run $29 to $58, with four brands charging in kronor, pounds and Australian dollars instead. Matchstick holds the bottom of that range and Malbon the top. Several of these are sold out, which counts for less on a towel than it would on a shoe, because they are repeat items and the brands restock them.

The Ones With a Story

Agronomy Workshop
Unusual Lies Towel · Earth
Agronomy Workshop prints this one to look like a crumpled paper bag, fake fold shadows and all, down to the small print about club membership. Underneath the trick it is 100% woven terry cotton, which is the only conventional thing about it. The brand’s own product copy signs off with “Won’t improve your lies,” and that is the posture of the whole operation.

Local Rule
LCLRL Towel · Dark Green · 399 SEK (~$42)
Local Rule is Swedish and prices in kronor, so 399 SEK comes out around $42 before shipping. The logo repeats across the dark green in a grid tight enough that it stops reading as branding and starts reading as pattern. The towel is also large, large enough that the product shot needs a person to hold it open.

Mogshade × Parmore
No Membership Required Towel · £35 · Sold out
Mogshade and Parmore put blackletter type on cream and called the result No Membership Required. The pair shot it against a wall covered in graffiti rather than a seamless studio backdrop, which suits a towel carrying that phrase. The towel sold out at £35.

Seamus Golf
Pendleton Wyeth Trail Towel · $45
Seamus had Pendleton weave the Wyeth Trail as an actual jacquard rather than printing a version of it, which is the difference between texture and a photograph of texture. Cream, rust and slate run through the cloth, and a leather tab hangs it off the bag. Seamus charges $45.

Pattern and Print

Devereux
Smokin' Zaleas Knitted Towel · White/Green · $38
Devereux has knitted the graphic rather than printing it, which gives the skeleton caddie with his cigar and his bag of clubs real depth in the surface. A knit also will not crack after twenty washes the way a print does. The white and green version runs $38.

Tokyo Country Club Towel · $39.95 · Sold out
Birds of Condor has Japanese and English type sharing one panel on a black ground with a yellow border, under the name Tokyo Country Club. The palette is loud enough that somebody in the group will ask about it at the turn. The towel sold out at $39.95.

Dormie Workshop
Paisley Towel · Navy · $30
Dormie Workshop built its name on leather headcovers, which is why the towels get less attention than they should. This one is navy paisley with a checkerboard band running across the top and the bottom, a combination that has no business working as well as it does. Dormie prices it at $30.

Pasture Towel · $45 · Sold out
Radry Golf is one artist in Wisconsin drawing everything by hand, and the Pasture towel is where that hand goes quiet. Cows in pale green on pale green, tonal enough that you read the pattern before you read the subject. Most of the category goes the other way. The towel sold out at $45.

Kooka Icon Towel · Forest/Yellow · $44.95
Walker Golf scatters kookaburras across forest green in mustard yellow, which is the Australian bird doing the work an anchor pattern usually does. The two colours sit close enough in value that the birds read as texture from a few feet away and as birds up close. The price is $44.95.

Club Codes

Dancing Arrows Towel · $38 · Sold out
Sugarloaf Social Club runs small red and navy arrows across white with a woven label at the corner, and the whole thing reads like a vintage tea towel somebody found in the back of a pro shop drawer. The scale is small enough that it still works folded over a bag strap. The towel sold out at $38.

Bluegrass Fairway
Do Not Remove From Pool Caddie Towel · $40 · Sold out
Bluegrass Fairway takes the blue stripe on white that reads as club pool issue and sews on a patch reading DO NOT REMOVE FROM POOL. The joke lands because the towel looks the part first and announces itself second. The towel sold out at $40.

Winston Collection
Course Maps Caddie Towel · $39.99
Winston Collection covers white terry in dozens of small green course-map ovals, scattered rather than gridded. Up close you can pick individual routings out of the pattern, which is the sort of detail that only pays off for the person holding it. The price is $39.99.

Matchstick Golf
Roosevelt Pattern Towel · $29
Matchstick Golf is better known for enamel ball markers, and the towels are the better product. Dense yellow iconography covers a black ground, and it hangs from a carabiner rather than a clip or a grommet. Matchstick prices it at $29.

SWAG Golf
Texas Locals Only Towel · $44.44
SWAG Golf makes Locals Only as a state-by-state series and the Texas edition lands in orange paisley. For anybody playing Austin munis it is the default pick, and the orange does not pretend to be subtle about where it comes from. SWAG prices it at $44.44.

Plain, Done Properly

Malbon Golf
Ironworks Caddy Towel · Ivory · $58
Malbon Golf keeps the Ironworks towel to collegiate block lettering in pale blue on ivory, with no border and no trim to break up the field. The result sits at the quiet end of a brand that does not usually operate there. Malbon charges $58 for it.

Tour Towel · All Black · $38
Jones Sports Co has been making bags since 1971 and the Tour Towel is built like it belongs to one. The body is ribbed black with a woven Jones label at the fold and nothing else printed on it anywhere. At $38 it goes with a black carry bag and stays out of the way.

Left of Field
Flower Golf Towel · Brown · A$35 (~$23) · Sold out
Left of Field works out of Sydney and prices in Australian dollars, so A$35 comes out near $23 before shipping. The pattern is tonal flowers on tan, quiet enough that it only registers as a pattern up close. The brown sold out.

Sounder
Cleeve Hill Logo Bag Towel · £30
Sounder names this one for Cleeve Hill, the course in Gloucestershire the brand comes from, and keeps the design to black with white banding and a small tree mark at the base. It is a bag towel rather than a caddie towel, sized to hang off a strap and stay there. Sounder prices it at £30.

Six of the eighteen were sold out at the time of writing: Mogshade × Parmore, Birds of Condor, Radry Golf, Sugarloaf Social Club, Bluegrass Fairway and Left of Field. All six are repeat items their brands have restocked before.

What is the cheapest golf towel here?

The Matchstick Golf Roosevelt Pattern towel at $29, followed by Dormie Workshop's Paisley Towel at $30.

What is the most expensive?

Malbon Golf's Ironworks Caddy Towel at $58. Local Rule's LCLRL towel is 399 SEK, roughly $42 before shipping from Sweden.

Some brands repeat, the products do not. Malbon, Jones, Walker Golf, Devereux, Birds of Condor, Sugarloaf Social Club and Seamus all appeared in earlier volumes with different towels.

Is the Seamus towel really Pendleton fabric?

Yes. It is a collaboration, and the Wyeth Trail jacquard is woven by Pendleton rather than printed to imitate it.
