About

The Grassy Issue is a golf publication run out of Austin, Texas by Lenny Harrington.

I moved here from Brooklyn four years ago and fell into the municipal scene. What got me was how casual it is. You can walk on, you can walk the course, and the golf is a lot better than the green fee suggests. I grew up in New York playing my parents’ course in the Hudson Valley on weekends, which is a different game entirely.

The site started because the subculture around golf is doing something different right now. Small brands are making things that look like nothing the category was making ten years ago, and the people behind them are getting platforms that golf media would never have handed them. I have always had an eye for design, culture and media, and this is where those things meet. The Grassy Issue is a passion project I work on in my free time, flagging the coolest and most eye-catching things in golf as they come out.

What’s here

Field Notes covers courses and the people who keep them, weighted toward the Austin municipals — Lions, Hancock, Jimmy Clay, Kizer and Morris Williams.

Drops & Brands covers what the independent side of golf is making, across a roster of 89 brands. Every brand has its own page in the index.

News is everything else that moves.

How it works

The writing is all original and all done here. Product photography comes from the brands. Course and travel photography is shot on the ground where noted. Nothing on the site is syndicated or reprinted from a press release.

Picks are made on taste. No brand pays for placement, and no brand sees a piece before it runs. When a link earns a commission, that is spelled out in the affiliate disclosure.
