Jones Sports Co has been making golf bags since 1971, when a 40-year-old taxi driver named George Jones started selling hand-crafted bags out of the trunk of his cab. Within a decade, the single-strap Jones carry bag owned 90% of the elite amateur and college golf market. George was an innovator — he helped develop the stand mechanisms and strap systems that are now standard across the industry. When he sold the company in 1990, new ownership tried to compete with the big manufacturers and lost what made the bags special.
In 2011, Matt Lemman and Chris Carnahan bought the brand and brought it back. They started with just the Original carry bag and rebuilt from there — stripping away the clutter and returning to the clean, functional design George intended. Today, Jones runs out of Portland, Oregon, with a full lineup from the $175 Original to the $375 Heritage Trouper. The 2026 collection introduced new fabrics — wax-effect ripstops, elevated vegan leathers, heavy-duty weaves — and the Utility X, one of the most interesting bag releases of the year. Their tagline says it: Our Game Travels.
